The Harris Center for Mental Health and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities has opened a new Youth Diversion Center in Houston, which will offer a safe space for young people aged 13-17 who have engaged in low-level offenses. The center will provide programs for those in need of temporary respite care due to a mental health crisis or psychological and social intervention programs. Referrals to the center will come from the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department, and the center aims to foster community and family reintegration.

Instead of juvenile detention, kids are provided ongoing support during their stay and are connected to long-term services as they transition out of the facility.

The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD is excited to announce the grand opening of the Youth Diversion Center in Houston. The Youth Diversion Center is a collaborative effort between the Harris County Resources for Children & Adults, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department, and the Kinder Institute of Urban Research at Rice University.
