Embracing September: A Month of Awareness and Recovery at The Harris Center

September is a significant month at The Harris Center for many reasons. We are particularly passionate about recognizing both Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and National Recovery Month during this time. While our commitment to the safety and health of those we serve is unwavering year-round, this month presents an opportunity to highlight how we can continue to grow personally and professionally in these critical areas of mental health care.

- Listen to those who are struggling.

- Intervene to keep others safe.

- Validate the feelings of individuals when they bravely share their experiences.

- Encourage those who are struggling to keep going and seek out treatment options.

This year, we continue to L.I.V.E. in the moment with those we serve, as well as with our families and co-workers. However, our focus has shifted towards the overall recovery journey. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) defines recovery as a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential. This definition truly encapsulates our purpose here at The Harris Center.

Whether we are working with an individual who is feeling hopeless and contemplating suicide, or someone who is ready to reclaim their life from the grip of addiction, our focus remains steadfast on how we can support them as they L.I.V.E. to Recover.

We have exciting events planned for September and some great goodies to hand out, so be sure to check out the activity calendar. Join your Zero Suicide team and substance use teams as we collaborate to celebrate the important work we do. Let’s keep our minds refreshed with our purpose and continue to support each other and those we serve all month long. We look forward to LIVING out these moments with each one of you.
