Harris County Mental Health Jail Diversion Program

The expansion of the Harris County Mental Health Jail Diversion Program creates two new opportunities for law enforcement to divert persons with mental illness before they are booked into the Harris County Jail. The newly updated Diversion Program allows law enforcement to divert persons with mental illness who have been picked up for low-level, non-violent offenses, such as trespass, to a more appropriate mental health intervention.

While The Harris Center now serves as the lead Agency for the program, the Harris County Mental Health Jail Diversion Program is truly a collaboration between multiple stakeholders who are deeply invested in addressing the intersection of mental health and the criminal justice system.

They include:

  • The Harris County Judge’s Office
  • The Harris County Commissioners Court
  • The Harris County Sheriff’s Office
  • The Houston Police Department
  • The Harris County District Attorney’s Office
  • The Harris County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council Mental Health Standing Committee
